Dolphin Encounter
Kaikoura is renowned for its diverse range of marine mammals and birdlife, making it the best place in New Zealand to observe whales, dolphins, seals, and albatross.
Swimming or Watching the Dusky Dolphins
Dolphin Encounter offers two options: swimming with the dolphins or watching the dusky dolphins. Both swimmers and watchers travel on the same boat, so if someone in your group prefers to watch rather than swim, it won’t be a problem as all guests travel together. Swimming with dolphins is a unique and highly sought-after experience, often described as life-changing and creating some of the most special and heart-warming memories of any activity. Only 16 swimmers are allowed on each vessel, with plenty of additional space for watching.
Joining the tour as a watcher provides spectacular views of these acrobatic and energetic dolphins. Witnessing the interaction between swimmers and dolphins is also a fascinating experience and could accurately be described as the most incredible dolphin show you are likely to see.
Dusky dolphins are considered the most acrobatic of all dolphin species, making it a “must-do” experience while in Kaikoura. Pods of dusky dolphins, ranging in size from 100 to 1000, can typically be found all year round. Boats are specifically built with optimum viewing in mind and have upstairs decks as well as walk-around bows to enable you to capture the perfect images. Time on the boat out at sea is approximately 2.5 hours.
