Hobbiton Movie Set Tour (Self Drive): Immerse yourself in the magical world of Middle-earth by visiting the Hobbiton Movie Set. This enchanting location served as the idyllic setting for The Shire in the highly acclaimed movie, The Lord of the Rings, directed by Peter Jackson.
Your tour begins with a scenic drive through the stunning 1,250-acre sheep farm, offering breathtaking views of the Kaimai Ranges. Accompanied by a knowledgeable guide, you will be taken on a fascinating journey through the ten-acre site, where you will learn about the intricate details and craftsmanship that went into creating the Hobbiton set.
You will have the opportunity to explore the charming hobbit holes, the Green Dragon Inn, the Mill, and other architectural structures that were built for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films. You will also witness the beautiful transformation of this picturesque Waikato farmland into the iconic Middle-earth location.
After the tour, you will return to The Shire’s Rest, where you can enjoy the Sheep Farm Experience and take in the breathtaking scenery.
Tours depart from The Shire’s Rest, located at 501 Buckland Road, Hinuera, Matamata. Free courtesy transportation is available from the Matamata Information Centre/i-SITE, situated at 45 Broadway in Matamata.
